Horatio Curti

Horacio Curti studied the shakuhachi in Japan with Kakizakai Kaoru, and there he received his shakuhachi shihan from Yokoyama Katsuya. Specialising in KSK koten honkyoku, later also got involved with Free Improvised Music and Western Classical Contemporary Music.


He has collaborated with composers, musicians, dancers and orchestras from around the world, having premiered several pieces in different formations including his premier as soloist with the Spanish National Orchestra of ‘Desert’, concerto for shakuhachi and orchestra by Ramon Humet. He has also recorded two solo albums, ‘ichi’ and ‘home is now’, created and recorded music for audiovisual and books, and performed in Europe, Japan, North and South America.


Some of his projects included: a tour with No’s National Living Treasure Reijiro Tsumura, the recording as soloist of ‘Desert’, concerto for shakuhachi and orchestra with Catalonia National Orchestra (OBC), or the creation together with dancer Andres Corchero, of the performative piece ‘Ukigumo’ based on kapanese poems to death.


Holder of a European PhD in musicology with a thesis in dialogue between ethnomusicology and artistic research, he is associate professor and head of the ‘Research in Music’ master’s program, and the ‘Asian Music Program’ at Catalonia College of Music (Escola Superior de M sica de Catalunya, Esmuc), and member of the ‘Sound & City research group’.


He has been chairperson of the European Shakuhachi Society from 2019 to 2022.
