Emmanuelle Rouaud

Emmanuelle Rouaud is a French musician specialising in shakuhachi, silver and baroque flute. She holds, among others, the certificates Prix de la Ville de Paris and Prix du CRR de Paris et CRR Cergy-Pontoise in early music, and teaches flute at CRR Versailles Grand Parc. In addition, since 2013, she is studying traditional solo (honkyoku) and modern repertoire with Teruo Furuya, director of the Chikushinkai / KSK in Tokyo, who awarded her the shihan diploma in 2021.
Emmanuelle’s fascination with exploring the expressive possibilities of the shakuhachi in terms of timbre and sound has led her to collaborate with French composer Henri Algadafe to develop a repertoire of contemporary music for shakuhachi. Their collaboration led to performances in Buc Conservatoire (2015), WSF London (2018), ESS Festival in Ireland (2023) and most recently at the Sibelius Museum in Turku, Finland (2024) and WSF Texas (2025). Currently they are working on new compositions including electric guitar, electronics and shakuhachi under the name of Neaji Ensemble.

Emmanuelle also performs traditional solo and ensemble music with e.g. Gaho Takahashi Fumie Hihara and Naoko Kikuchi as well as has performed numerous times with Teruo Furuya on stage. Since 2023 she performs the shakuhachi part of the anime stage show Naruto Symphonic Experience and its sequel Shippuden Part I, touring various venues around Europe.

Emmanuelle Rouaud lives and works near Paris, France, promoting shakuhachi at her Atelier de Shakuhachi in the Paris region and she is the main organiser of the Teruo Furuya workshops in Paris. She is a European Shakuhachi Society Board member since 2020.
